Hazard Mitigation Committee
The Plainfield Hazard Mitigation Committee meets every third Thursday of the month at 7:00 PM at the Town Office. The Hazard Mitigation Committee's goal include providing the Select Board with information and suggestions to reduce or eliminate the long-term risks to human life and property in Plainfield from fluvial erosion/landslide, flash floods/floods, Marshfield dam releases or failure, winter storms, long-term electric outages, hazardous waste spills, forest fires, and other identified hazards. The committee gathers information and develops long term recommendations to mitigate the impact of future flood and other hazardous events on public safety and infrastructure.
"What's Up With the Sun?" Solar Storms and Their Potential Impact on Central Vermont
Special Public Forum - Plainfield Hazard Mitigation Committee Plainfield Town Hall, 18 High Street, Plainfield 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 5th In recent weeks the Sun has been heading into its latest "Solar Maximum," which will peak some time next year. Every 11 years the number of sunspots increases dramatically, along with larger numbers of solar flares including the most dramatic "X-class" flares. When such flares release a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) and it is directed toward Earth, consequences could include loss of GPS, disruptions to communications and satellites, and potential interruption of power grids. Sunspot 3664 released a series of major X-flares and CMEs toward Earth in mid-May... equivalent to a similar rare solar storm back in 2003, with a number of damaging effects including serious GPS failures impacting farmers, and disruptions of emergency communications. That sunspot has rotated around the sun and has just returned as sunspot 3697. It will be Earth-facing shortly, and is again releasing strong flares and CMEs. What can we expect? How do we prepare for a major solar storm? Which of our municipal and home systems are the most vulnerable and how might we mitigate some of the worst impacts we could see? What resources do our local communities have to build solidarity and a working network of services, if the regular systems fail? Open to all Plainfield and Marshfield residents - please join us.
